Not signed up for feast yet for Tournament of the Lily? Signed up but want to be part of some fun schtick? Jeff is looking for some servers for a period high table service based out of the Boke of Keryunge, a 15th century carver's manual.
In period, the lord's table service was frequently provided by young men or older boys of similar or somewhat lower rank, placed in the household to learn lordly stuff.
Preferably, we need young, well-dressed men (oh, darn!), but older, well-dressed men, or older not-so well dressed men, or older not-so-well dressed women will do. :-D Please, if you're interested, comment or PM me. We also have a couple of extra men's 15th century gowns (Jeff's) that we can put on people over pretty much whatever clothes you have.
You will be trained that day, and you don't actually have to say anything. :-)
ETA: Servers will eat, no charge. :-D

[o] From the Wikipedia article on Zeus: "Zeus, poetically referred to by the vocative Zeu pater ("O, father Zeus"), is a continuation of *Di̯ēus, the Proto-Indo-European god of the daytime sky, also called *Dyeus ph2tēr ("Sky Father").[4] The god is known under this name in Sanskrit (cf. Dyaus/Dyaus Pita), Latin (cf. Jupiter, from Iuppiter, deriving from the PIE vocative *dyeu-ph2tēr[5]), deriving from the basic form *dyeu- ("to shine", and in its many derivatives, "sky, heaven, god").[4] And in Germanic and Norse mythology (cf. *Tīwaz > OHG Ziu, ON Týr), together with Latin deus, dīvus and Dis(a variation of dīves[6]), from the related noun *deiwos.[6] To the Greeks and Romans, the god of the sky was also the supreme god, whereas this function was filled out by Odin among the Germanic tribes. Accordingly, they did not identify Zeus/Jupiter with either Tyr or Odin, but with Thor (Þórr). Zeus is the only deity in the Olympic pantheon whose name has such a transparent Indo-European etymology.[7]"
Yep, Jupiter, Zeus, Tir, all the same word.
I love language. It's so damn weird. Boom di yadda.

I have made a lot of progress on my to-do list for Lily. Since my last (costume-related) post, I have: -hemmed my kirtle -finished the fur collar and cuffs and applied them to the gown -hemmed the gown (it's done!) -hemmed both pennons and sewed on the ties -made the hennin (though I did a quick-and-dirty version with buckram and duct tape - if I have time I'll add wire to it for more stability) -dyed silk fabric for placket, belt and favors -changed out the blue bias tape on Kevin's coif for white The end is sight, I think - I still have to sew the placket, belt and favors, but I don't think those will take long - or, I should say, the machine sewing will go quickly. I'll have some hand finishing to do, but I think I can knock that out in a couple of evenings. I also plan to make a sheer partlet and a veil for the hennin, and those are going to need to be hand-hemmed, which will also take an evening or so. So, really, I might be done with sewing by Wednesday (especially if Kevin takes the boy to the gym with him this evening). How crazy would that be?! I should put a lid on it - as soon as I dare to think I might finish early, something horrible will happen and I'll be up all night Friday. Looks like the weather should be OK - cloudy and high of 60 or so. Good for the layers of wool and fur I'll be wearing, but, fingers crossed, no rain. Tags: costuming Current Mood: busy

Sunday was a very productive day at home for all of us. We really needed a day to get things done. Luke and Grettir raked 18 bags of leaves, and Grettir discovered the amazing power of bribes. (Luke bagged 3 bags and decided he was tired, only to remember he really WASN'T tired once Grettir told him he would get a quarter for each bag of leaves. Yay for cheap labor!) While the menfolk were doing yard work, I finished the last of the wallpapering that had been on hold all last week and also cut and set the final row of tiles along the edges of the tub. Every one of those tiles had to be trimmed in some way (the tub is not perfectly level, whereas my rows of tiles are), so I spent a fair amount of time at the wet saw. It will be a long time before I do any more wallpapering, I tell you. My leg is feeling much better, although it still is a bit twingy. I could go up and down the ladder, for example, and I wasn't limping at Crown. A big bruise has developed on my thigh in the spot of the pulled muscle, which seems odd--I can't remember ever having a pulled muscle bruise up like this. Hopefully it will go away soon. For now, it's my evidence that I didn't make up the whole thing. :-) Oh, xgreenjudasx ? That mead ROCKS.
